In November, BUILDSPACE partners brought innovation, collaboration, and hands-on learning to life through two dynamic hackathons in Madrid and Athens, engaging students, researchers, and professionals in the co-creation of digital solutions for smarter and greener cities.
The first BUILDSPACE Horizon Project Hackathon took place at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid(UPM), coordinated by both CARTIF and UPM. Participating teams were challenged to work with BUILDSPACE services and choose between two tracks: developing strategic proposals for urban adaptation and planning, or creating innovative communication and visualisation approaches to showcase BUILDSPACE results. The quality of the ideas and the teams’ ability to clearly communicate complex outcomes highlighted the strong potential of BUILDSPACE tools in real-world applications.
Later in the month, BUILDSPACE was also part of #Apps4AthensHackathon 2.0 – AI Edition, a 48-hour event hosted in the city of Athens. Over 250 participants across 40 teams collaborated to prototype AI-driven solutions for a smarter and more sustainable city. BUILDSPACE partners SingularLogic and DSS Lab, EPU-NTUA actively supported teams on the ground, fostering the project’s learning-by-building philosophy.
The hackathons clearly demonstrated the added value of BUILDSPACE in bridging research, education, and real-world application. By placing participants at the center of the innovation process, BUILDSPACE enabled them to experiment with advanced digital and AI-driven tools while addressing real urban challenges. The strong engagement, creativity, and quality of the solutions produced highlight the importance of hands-on, collaborative approaches in shaping sustainable and resilient cities.
