The BUILDSPACE project partner EPU-NTUA attended the 13th Panhellenic Conference of HellaGIs in Athens, Greece, on November 29th.
The event aimed to bring together academics, professionals, researchers, students, and public entities to explore the latest developments and applications in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data management.
During the conference, Iason C. Dimitriou, from the NTUA team, presented and discussed the recent publication "Multi-Criteria GIS-based offshore wind farm site collection: Case Study in Greece”, inspired by the BUILDSPACE Project. The study showcased a detailed methodology for identifying optimal sites for offshore wind farms.
The Methodology: From GIS to Decision-Making
The research leveraged advanced tools like ArcGIS Pro 3.0 and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) frameworks, particularly the extended VIKOR method. By incorporating environmental, social, and technical factors, the team identified and ranked 35 distinct Areas of Interest (AOIs) across Greece. These locations, including regions south of Alexandroupoli and near the Gulf of Patras, represent the most promising sites for offshore wind farm development.
This GIS-based methodology aligns with BUILDSPACE's emphasis on using data-driven insights to guide urban planning and energy strategies. By integrating satellite data, expert input, and computational models, the project offers a template for cities worldwide to harness renewable energy effectively.
The research and publication underline the importance of actionable, science-backed strategies. By linking offshore wind development to urban resilience, Greece is paving the way for a sustainable future, and BUILDSPACE is at the heart of this transformation.
