ArcGIS Greece

The BUILDSPACE project partner EPU-NTUA attended the ArcGIS Greece - Cyprus 2024 User Conference, which took place on 23 and 24 October in Athens, Greece.

Assessing the adoption level of solar PV installation, on district scale of urban environment

During the conference, Iason C. Dimitriou, from the NTUA team, presented the recent publication “Assessing the adoption level of solar PV installation, on district scale of urban environment” and the photovoltaic potential map, which was developed in the context of BUILDSPACE. The study assesses and prioritises urban districts, specifically within Riga, Latvia, for solar photovoltaic (PV) installations using a combined Geographic Informations Systems (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach. Precisely, the research evaluates 58 districts integrating technical, social and economic criteria to rank them according to their sustainability for PV installations. In general, the results identified higher populated areas as the most suitable neighbourhoods for PV deployment as urban areas with a large number of buildings that have a greater PV potential. Therefore, decision-makers should prioritize populated districts in terms of PV installation in order to meet energy demand at source.

Riga Pilot

Through the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), NTUA was able to contribute to BUILDSPACE Service 3 (SE3) by creating a Solar Map of the municipality of Riga, Latvia. The Solar Map can be used as an important supporting tool by both policymakers and citizens in order to make informed decisions regarding the installations and utilisation of PV technology.

In particular, SE3. Building Environment Climate Scenarios aims to estimate current and future building energy demand under different climate scenarios while promoting retrofitting strategies and solar PV development. In this way, the research will support urban planners and policymakers in achieving Riga’s climate neutrality goals under the EU “100 Climate Neutral Cities by 2030” initiative. Indeed, the BUILDSPACE pilot in the city of Riga focuses on the testing of the building energy demand forecast service at the city scale to ensure efficient resource allocation, plan for future energy needs, adapt to climate change impacts, promote sustainable development, and reap economic benefits.
